TIPS FROM THE SPA APRIL, 2009

TIPS
from the Spa 1

By Master Stylist Dawn Shannon, owner of Intuition Salon and Spa
With Spring approaching and Summer soon to follow, I am frequently asked by clients about protecting their hair from the sun and heat in this hot and humid climate. In this month's article we cover three of the most asked questions.

Q. How can I keep my hair color from fading from the sun?
A. The biggest solution is using products specifically developed for this purpose. One of my favorites is Sun Shine made by Simply Organic. Sunshine is made to protect the hair from the sun's harmful rays that can damage hair and create color fading. Simply Organic is the most organic professional hair care line I have found to date and has professional salon quality results. Sunshine is sprayed on the hair while wet after you shampoo and condition. You leave it on and it not only protects your hair but it adds a nice, natural looking shine as well. This is something that can be used on any kind of hair and will not make your hair dirty or heavy and can be used in addition to any other styling products and any other product lines. It is also great for protection from chlorine and saltwater while swimming. There are several other professional salon hair care products that help with heat and humidity as well, and many professional salon hair care lines have SPFs and different sun protectants built into their shampoos, conditioners and styling products. Spring and summer, with the additional heat and humidity, is really the time to focus on protecting your hair and having your color last. At-home maintenance and the products you use are the most important factors.

Q. Is there an "in Salon" treatment that can be done to help with protecting my hair and my hair color from the sun?
A. The best I have found to date is the Clear Conditioning Gloss, which is offered by most salons. Clear Conditioning Gloss is created by professional color lines and is itself a "hair color" that is actually clear. Clear Conditioning Gloss conditions and protects the hair for about six weeks - depending on the product line used, the type of hair you have and how frequently you wash your hair. The gloss can be applied to any type of color-treated hair as well as to hair that is not colored. It does not damage the hair or change the color in any way, but was developed specifically to protect hair and help keep the color longer. Other benefits of this product is that it helps with the overall condition of hair and assists in protecting hair during any heat styling (such as flat iron, blow drying, hot rollers, etc.)

Q. I have a convertible/ride a motorcycle - how can I protect my hair from the sun and wind?
A. I would start with the first two answers above, but the most effective thing you can do in addition has been around since the very beginnings of motor vehicle transportation: wear a scarf around your hair! Hats are also good, but with most hats there are areas where the hair pokes out and is left unprotected. Therefore I really recommend using a scarf as you then have more control over ensuring your hair is fully covered.
These are the best solutions I have found over my 17 years in the Salon and Spa Industry.
