My oncologist told me it doesn’t matter what I eat. He says that chemo and radiation are my best bet now that my cancer has been surgically removed. I want to know if there is anything more I can do to help myself? MARCH, 2009

Dear Doctor Carol,

My oncologist told me it doesn’t matter what I eat. He says that chemo and radiation are my best bet now that my cancer has been surgically removed. I want to know if there is anything more I can do to help myself?

Dear B.S.,

You didn’t mention what type of cancer you have, but the principle is the same in any case. Cancer doesn’t occur in a healthy body. Although you may have inherited a weakness in some genes, it must have been triggered by something environmental or you would have been born with cancer. It took many years to manifest. During those years your cells were bombarded at some critical times with mysterious triggers that made some cells start to grow out of control.

Another factor also had to exist. The normally vigilant immune system had to be tricked into looking the other way so the few mad cells could grow unmolested. In fact, we all make aberrant cells every day, but they are scarfed up by the white blood cells before they can get very far. So what could cause such a breakdown in your personal defense system to allow a potentially deadly tumor to develop?

Many cancers begin on your plate. Some begin in the workplace, the studio or the fields. Harsh chemicals enter our bodies through the mouth, nose and skin. Pesticides, fungicides, plastics, dyes, fabric softeners, food additives, preservatives, steroids, heavy metals, etc., accumulate in our bodies as we eat, drink and breathe. Thousands of tons of chemicals are pumped into the environment every day. Few have been individually tested for safety in humans.

What you can do for yourself is to learn about the process that poisoned your immune system and do your best to reverse it. Let’s review the strategy.

    1. Stop the influx of toxins right now. That means (of course) quit smoking and drinking or hanging out with people who do. Breathing someone else’s smoke is as deadly as inhaling your own.

    2. Exercise to get the blood flowing and move toxins into the liver, where they are processed for excretion. Sweating out toxins is one way they can leave. Wash after exercise so the toxins don’t reabsorb back through the skin.

    3. The major route of excretion is the bowels. You don’t want toxins getting reabsorbed here either. Cleanse internally by eating high fiber foods. Do internal washes like colonics on a regular basis. Coffee enemas, although the “butt” of many jokes, are extremely effective in moving the sludge from gall bladder to toilet.

    4. Drink lots and lots of pure, clean water. Urine is another vehicle for moving bad stuff out and diluting its effect on your bladder.

    5. Drink at least 16 ounces of freshly prepared juice every day. This should be 50% veggies from the cabbage family, - broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, since they contain powerful anticancer compounds. Carrots, beets, apples or other good tasting produce can be used to make the drink more palatable. All your fruits and veggies must be organic!!!! Any (lean) meats or (fat-free) dairy products that you eat must also be organic, grass fed, hormone free.

    6. Test your urinary pH every morning. You want the litmus paper to read higher than 6.5 every day. An acid internal environment (below 6.5) is a breeding ground for cancer. Alkaline urine means cancer is uncomfortable in your body.

    7. Keep reading and looking for answers. Read Ralph Moss’s website and his newsletter. He is a Ph.D. who has devoted his career to investigating cancer treatments, both conventional and alternative. Become an expert on your options.
