FIRST ROBOTIC LUNG SURGERY PERFORMED AT

MOFFITT CANCER CENTER

Ray Berkelbach is taking long walks three times a day just a couple weeks after having lung surgery. The 68-year-old retiree from Punta Gorda underwent robotic surgery at Moffitt Cancer Center to remove a cancerous part of his lung. His was the first lung procedure in the Tampa Bay area that used the robot-assisted da Vinci surgical system.

“This took nothing out of me. I’ve had no pain,” said Berkelbach. “People look at me and can’t believe I just had a lung operation.”

Lung surgeries are very complex operations because of the large vessels leading to and from the lungs and heart. Unlike the traditional open-chest method, the da Vinci system allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures by guiding robotic arms as they make tiny incisions. The new technique promises minimal trauma to the patient and better surgical results.
Only early stage lung cancer patients are candidates for the robotic procedure. The benefits include shorter hospital stays and decreased pain and discomfort. Berkelbach was the first patient at Moffitt to undergo the da Vinci lung surgery.

KINESIS ADDS NEW DIMENSION OF

WELLNESS AT CARILLON

Most gyms have walls — at least four of them, usually — but only a handful have Technogym’s Kinesis Wall. St. Anthony’s Carillon Wellness Center is proud to offer this innovative workout to its members. Even though the structure doesn’t do much to hold up a building, the Kinesis can do outrageous things for your body.
The Kinesis Wall is constructed of four panels with cables, grips, and weight stacks that allow movements to be easy, natural and without restrictions.
The technology of the Kinesis uses the power of its quartet of seemingly simple weight stations where personal trainers can get clients to work multiple muscle groups, core strength, flexibility and coordination simultaneously. Each of its four stations (called “alpha,” “beta,” “gamma” and “delta”) has handles attached to cables in different places so you can switch the direction from which the weight is coming (above, below or in front). The Kinesis Wall is a small group and one-on-one personal training tool. Small classes of three to five people allow the trainer to better customize workouts to each client.
“Designed to accommodate multi-plane motion patterns, the Kinesis provides more than 500 exercises in one machine,” adds Cam of the possible ways to use the Kinesis Wall.

Classes for the Kinesis Wall began earlier this year. Please call St. Anthony’s Carillon Wellness Center at 727-520-4444 for details.

CARING FOR FLORIDA:
Summit To
Address Urgent Nursing Shortage

AARP Florida State Director Lori Parham will join with other health-care experts in Orlando June 1-2 for a Florida summit to rally the state to action to reduce a serious and growing shortage of trained nurses.

Florida’s summit meeting, to be held at the Orlando Airport Hyatt Hotel, is sponsored by AARP, Employ Florida, Workforce Florida Inc., BlueCross BlueShield of Florida, Generation RN, the Florida Hospital Association, the Florida Center for Nursing and the University of Central Florida College of Nursing.

The U.S. faces an unprecedented nursing shortage that is driving up health care costs and threatening the care of hundreds of million of Americans, including 78 million aging baby boomers, Parham noted.  By 2025, America is expected to need 500,000 more nurses than will be available.  In Florida, the Center for Nursing forecasts a full-time equivalent shortfall of 52,200 registered nurses by 2020.

Florida’s education capacity summit will bring together nursing leaders from each of Florida’s regions, as part of a collaborative project team in an effort to improve state-level sharing and collaboration in support of regional efforts.
